Back to overview

H2med, the hydrogen corridor supplying Portugal, Spain, France and Germany with sustainable hydrogen, made remarkable progress since its inception, thanks to the support of its project partners and strong political endorsement at the highest levels.

The joint efforts of REN (Portugal), Enagás (Spain), NaTran and Teréga (France) as well as OGE (Germany) have been instrumental in advancing feasibility studies and cross-border technical cooperation.

To supply Central Europe with renewable hydrogen, H2med connects the hydrogen network of Portugal, Spain, France and Germany. The South-Western corridor is one of the most mature pipeline projects and has been recognised as “Energy Highway” by the European Commission. About 6,000 kilometers of repurposed and newly built pipelines are forming an energy corridor linking production centers with a lot of wind and sunshine to the demand centers in France and Germany.

H2med is developing fast. The environmental surveys showed the technical feasibility of the subsea pipeline BarMar, that connects Barcelona and Marseille and will allow producers on the Iberian Peninsula to supply Central Europe with cost-competitive and reliable energy.

Major upcoming milestones include public consultations, finalizing investment decisions and continuous alignment with the market. To build the corridor aligned with the market, H2med and interested companies are signing non-binding Letters of Intent in the first months of 2026. This will help to meet the needs of producers and offtakers.

In the second quarter of 2026 a Commercial Development Agreement will be signed, to pave the way to the commercial operation of the corridor. To develop terms and conditions, a tariff estimation will be published at the end of the year, followed by the Capacity Allocation Process and the publication of the term sheet in the beginning of 2027.

From summer 2027 to summer 2028, the investment request will be prepared. Therefore, the application for CEF-E funds for construction works will start at the end of 2028. The first capacity contracts can be booked from the beginning of 2029; at that time, the final investment decision will also be reached. Finally, the commercial operation date is scheduled for the last quarter of 2032. H2med invites all interested parties and potential partners to engage with the team at E-World (booth 6H131) to learn more about the roadmap, collaboration opportunities, and the pivotal role of H2med in shaping Europe’s hydrogen market for decades to come.
