  • H2med – The fast progress of the South-Western European Hydrogen Corridor
Back to overview

H2med, the hydrogen corridor supplying Portugal, Spain, France and Germany with sustainable hydrogen, made remarkable progress since its inception, thanks the support of its project partners and strong political endorsement at the highest levels.

The joint efforts of REN (Portugal), Enagás (Spain), NaTran and Teréga (France) as well as OGE (Germany) have been instrumental in advancing feasibility studies and cross-border technical cooperation.

Building Europe’s Hydrogen Backbone

The corridor consists of the national hydrogen backbones of Portugal, Spain and France connected to the German Core Grid. It connects producers on the Iberian Peninsula and France with main demand centers in France and Germany, with a capacity of 2 million tons per year. Main parts of the project are two interconnections between Portugal and Spain (CelZa, linking Celorico da Beira to Zamora) and between Spain and France (BarMar, linking Barcelona and Marseille).

The project enjoys robust backing from the governments of Spain, Portugal, France, and Germany, as well as endorsement by the European Union, reflecting its alignment with the REPowerEU plan and the region’s commitment to decarbonization. Recent milestones include strong political support and important progress in technical feasibility studies.

Feasibility studies completed succesfully

In November 2025, the project already successfully completed comprehensive geophysical prospecting campaigns and achieved technical feasibility for the BarMar project. This includes engineering analyses conducted by experts, which were carried out following extensive geophysical survey campaigns. Specifically, the campaigns of summer 2025 and of 2024 have confirmed that the proposed corridor for the BarMar hydrogen pipeline is viable from an engineering perspective. This allowed to specify the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of BarMar as well as of CelZa for 2032.

Strong political support by national governments and EU

After officially securing Project of Common Interest (PCI) status from the European Commission in 2024, the year 2025 has been marked by a decisive acceleration for the H2med project. This includes: the signing of Grant Agreements with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) for the BarMar and CelZa projects; the creation of the BarMar company last July to develop the interconnection between Barcelona and Marseille; and the reaffirmed political support from all member states involved in the H2med corridor and from the European Commission, which designates the corridor as a priority “energy highway,” as well as market support, characterised by the growing strength of the H2med Alliance, which now has 49 members across the entire hydrogen value chain since the event last September in Berlin.

These achievements demonstrate the project’s maturity and readiness to proceed to the next stages. The collaboration among the partners — Enagás, REN, NaTran, Teréga, and OGE — ensures that H2med is equipped with the expertise and resources needed to deliver a resilient and future-proof hydrogen backbone for Europe.
