  • Making Flexibility Economically Usable: From Volatility to Value Creation
Back to overview

Essen, February 10, 2026 – The expansion of decentralized generation and storage assets is fundamentally changing the requirements for energy systems. Volatile prices, growing demand peaks and the increasing number of decentralized assets are making flexibility a central lever for economic processes. Energiekoppler’s Flexibility Plant acts as an enabler in this context: it implements trading decisions made by marketers and enables both cross-market and multi-use applications, including self-consumption management and peak shaving. At E-World energy & water, Energiekoppler demonstrates how flexibility can be structured, controlled and deployed in a targeted way through software.

The Flexibility Plant: a modular platform for decentralized flexibility

The Flexibility Plant aggregates decentralized generators, storage systems and controllable consumers and operates them as a virtual power plant that can respond flexibly to market requirements – technology-neutral and scalable.

In operation, the Flexibility Plant (a new-generation Virtual Power Plant) translates physical asset flexibility into concrete courses of action. Forecasts for generation, consumption and storage states, as well as additional constraints, can form the basis for schedules that take economic objectives into account alongside operational conditions. All processes run fully automated down to the asset level, supported by continuous monitoring and transparent performance analysis of the asset portfolio.

Since the last E-World, the Flexibility Plant has been specifically expanded with new functions that address current market requirements and enable additional use cases.

New features in the Flexibility Plant

Trading Scenarios: Different deployment and trading strategies can be systematically mapped and compared in order to deploy flexibility in a targeted manner across varying market conditions.

Pool curtailment for renewable generation: Generation units are controlled in an aggregated manner at portfolio level to coordinate curtailment efficiently and ensure transparency.

Peak shaving: Load peaks are reduced automatically, supplemented by defined high-load time windows, allowing load shifts to be executed specifically during economically relevant periods.

Aggregation of local small-scale storage systems: Decentralized storage units are combined into a controllable entity that can be used both locally and economically – particularly in district-level and regional energy systems.

Keeping complexity under control

The increasing complexity of energy systems requires solutions that combine technical capabilities with economic control. The Flexibility Plant reduces operational complexity, makes flexibility usable and opens up new economic leeway – directly impacting day-to-day market and operational activities.

Live at E-World

At E-World energy & water, Energiekoppler will present the Flexibility Plant in practical operation – from forecasting and planning through to automated execution. Contextualization, exchange and concrete use cases will be at the forefront.
